Youth center in Berlin-Pankow
Renovation and reconstruction of a formerly occupied apartment house
This five-storey apartment house was built in 1886 and was in extremely bad condition when young people occupied it in 1989 to establish a youth center there. About ten years later, it was possible to begin renovation of the building with state financial subsidies. The youth center on the first and second upper floors and the café on the ground floor were maintained and apartments for supervised living for young people were created on the higher floors. Floor plans vary widely from floor to floor. Making use of the disused chimney shafts and raising the floors and lowering the ceilings in the newly installed baths on the third floor reduced the technical installations' effects on the building's structural substance.
