Goethe-Institut in Kiew/Ukraine
Restoration and reconstruction of a historic building under landmark preservation
In cooperation with the British Council, the Goethe Institute in Kiev, one of the largest in Eastern Europe, undertook the rebuilding and restoration of a landmark building on the grounds of the Fraternity Monastery’s school, founded in 1615. Great Britain took charge of reconstruction of the building’s façade and also installed its institute in one of the building’s wings. In the other wing, the Federal Republic of Germany prepared space for the Goethe Institute and also oversaw work on the Academy’s guest house. The joint activities not only encompassed cooperation during the construction phase, but also joint usage of several rooms. For example, the Goethe Institute’s auditorium on the top floor and the British Council’s café on the first floor serve both institutions.
