Goethe Institute in Jakarta, Indonesia
New construction, restoration, and reconstruction of a group of buildings under landmark preservation
Until the Goethe Institute took it over, the buildings in the former Dutch district of Jakarta were used by the German School. They were built in 1911/12 and are, along with their surroundings, subject to landmark preservation stipulations. The facility has one floor to the street side, two to the interior of the property. Buildings are grouped around two courtyards accessible from the street through roofed passageways between the buildings. A core aspect of the project was the new construction of an assembly hall for 325 people, one of the largest of its kind in Jakarta. The auditorium, with its various functional components, such as foyer, exhibition hall, and library, takes up about half of the available space. In addition, class rooms and administration offices have been arranged in the smaller restored buildings.
